Creating security codes

Before clients can access USSD functionality, they need a 6-digit security code. Security codes are created by authorized staff and sent to the client.

Prerequisites

  • The client must be active in Symba Microbanking
  • Log in to Symba Portal with a user account that is authorized to create client security codes

Steps

  • In the navigation menu, click on "Payments"
  • Click "USSD Emulator"
  • In the Security Codes section, search for the client by name or ID
  • Click on the client's name to view their details
  • Click the "Create Security Code" button
  • A 6-digit security code is automatically generated and displayed
  • Important: Copy this code immediately - it will only be shown once
  • Send the security code to the client securely (SMS, in person, etc.)
  • Click "Done" to confirm

The security code is now active and the client can use it to access USSD.

Security code requirements

  • 6-digit numeric code
  • Automatically generated for security
  • Shown only once at creation
  • Hashed before storage (never stored in plain text)

What to tell the client

Inform the client:

  • Their security code (6 digits)
  • The USSD code to dial (e.g., *123#)
  • Keep the code secure and memorized
  • Do not share the code with anyone
  • Contact you if they forget the code or after 3 unsuccessful attempts

Next steps

The client can now dial the USSD code and authenticate with their security code to access their account information.
