Creating holds

Create a manual hold to reserve a specific amount of funds in a savings account, preventing withdrawal of the held amount while still allowing other transactions.

Note: This creates a manual hold. For loan guarantees, the system automatically creates liens when a savings account is used as collateral.

Prerequisites

Log in to Symba Microbanking with a user account that has permission to create holds on savings accounts.

The savings account must be active and have sufficient available balance.

Steps

  • Open the savings account on which you want to create a hold
  • Click the menu icon in the account header
  • Select "More", then click "Create Hold"
  • Enter the hold details:
    • Hold Amount (required) - The amount to reserve (must not exceed available balance)
    • Reason (optional) - Description explaining why the hold is needed
  • Click "Submit"

The hold amount is immediately reserved. The account shows:

  • Account Balance - Total funds in the account (unchanged)
  • Available Balance - Account balance minus all hold amounts
  • Hold Amount - Total amount currently held

Common use cases

Manual holds are useful for:

  • Reserving amounts for pending transactions
  • Meeting regulatory or compliance requirements
  • Holding funds during dispute resolution
  • Temporary reservations for administrative purposes

For automatic loan guarantee holds, see Liens.

While a hold is active

  • The held amount cannot be withdrawn
  • New deposits increase the available balance
  • Multiple holds can exist on the same account
  • The account can still be blocked or unblocked independently
